Laika

Laika is a historical figure and a space exploration icon. Laika was a stray dog from Moscow, Russia, who became the first animal to orbit the Earth aboard the Soviet spacecraft Sputnik 2 in 1957. This pioneering mission marked the first time a living creature was sent into space. Laika's journey paved the way for human spaceflight and contributed to our understanding of the effects of space travel on living organisms. Unfortunately, Laika did not survive the mission, as technology for a safe return had not yet been developed. Laika's sacrifice helped advance space exploration and remains a symbol of the early days of human spaceflight.
